Teaching and Leading MFL in Primary Schools

With the renewed Ofsted focus on middle leaders in schools, this course aims to give Modern Foreign Language subject leaders an understanding of second language acquisition and teaching foreign languages, whilst offering solutions to build teachers’ subject knowledge and ensure progression across year groups.

This course will take place online.

Teaching Modern Foreign Languages in primary school can be challenging – particularly when teachers lack confidence or subject knowledge. This course aims to give practical and manageable suggestions in how to deliver an engaging and progression based curriculum, whilst giving subject leaders strategies to meet the new curriculum demands in a supportive and friendly environment.

During the course, participants will explore:

  1. The National Curriculum requirements for teaching MFL and what each area entails.
  2. The principles of language acquisition (focusing particularly on second language acquisition) to support young learners.
  3. Practical day-to-day activities to enhance the teaching of MFL whilst reinforcing general literacy skills.
  4. Ideas for recording progression across year groups.
